What Is Midjourney?

Midjourney is a text-to-image AI service from an independent research lab. You describe an image in a prompt and it generates stylized, detailed pictures, and it can animate an image into a five-second video that can be extended, according to Midjourney's video documentation. Midjourney's version documentation lists V8.2 as released on July 24, 2026, as an update focused on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization. Earlier versions, including V6 from December 2023, are part of the product's history.

What It's Good For

Midjourney is built around artistic image generation from natural language, with a strong reputation for cohesive, striking results across photorealistic scenes, cinematic frames, fantasy environments and abstract compositions. Midjourney says V8.2 images are more creative, bold and sophisticated than before, and that Personalization now understands your aesthetic tastes much better, especially on profiles with many points.

Limitations and Where It Falls Short

• No free plan: Midjourney's plan documentation says all plans are subscriptions, in four tiers: Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega.
• Privacy depends on the plan: Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is only available on the Pro and Mega plans.
• Fast GPU time is capped: Each plan includes a fixed amount of Fast GPU time, and unlimited generation applies only in Relax Mode on higher tiers.
• HD edits downscale: Using the inpainting or outpainting tools on HD images downscales the results to SD, so you need to upscale to return to HD.
